Ralph Steadman - Hunter S. Thompson
a.k.a - Dr. Preston's Cover Photo for the Blog.

The piece of art has been on Dr. Preston's American Lit Blog since the beginning of the year, and every time I looked at it I wondered, "What is this?" Although it is almost the end of the year, I just now asked Dr. Preston about it. Well, this is a portrait of the writer Hunter S. Thompson by Ralph Steadman.

Hunter S. Thompson/Gonzo Journalism
Hunter S. Thompson wrote using his own style of genre called Gonzo Journalism.

What is Gonzo journalism? "Gonzo journalism is a style of journalism that is written without claims of objectivity, often including the reporter as part of the story via a first-person narrative. The word "gonzo" is believed to be first used in 1970 to describe an article by Hunter S. Thompson, who later popularized the style."
In other words, Hunter S. Thompson would write about his own experiences as if it were news, but insert himself as if he was a character.
