AHA!
I had an AHA! moment when we were learning about direct and indirect characterization. When you asked us what they meant it was on the tip of my tounge but I just couldn't remember. Direct characterization is when an author directly tells us an emotion or an adjective about a character. Indirect characterization is when an author gives us these details without stating them; through actions, reactions, and dialogue.
