What's the inciting incident of the story?
The man meets a young girl who changes the way he views life and brings little things such as nature to his attention. This causes Montag to look at things different and changes his opinions throughout the first chapter. The girl dies and he misses her, still admiring her unique personality.

What's the significance of the Salamander?
I think the salamander pertains to the books being burned. It is known to be that a salamander can live in fire, unaffected by the flames. I think this represents the books because although the books are burned, the information is still unaffected by the flames, in the people's heads. The firemen can burn the books but they cannot burn the memories the books give to the readers.
